The Vegas Vortex Leaves Me Searching for Clues
[caption id="attachment_1429" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="What\'s Vegas without a New Year\'s Celebration?"][/caption]
Landing in Las Vegas on December 29 for a week long getaway/party to bring in 2011 has left me in a sort of "Alice in Wonderland Haze" now that I am back home and awaiting my work week to start anew. The most blaring question I need answered is "what the hell happened?"
In a nutshell, here's what I know and what I've learned since emerging from the Vegas Vortex:
-Landing in Vegas on December 29th reminded me of how much I love Vegas!
-December 29th was the day Roberto welcomed his second ...
Lethargic PK Dooming the Canucks
What's beginning to sound like a broken record could soon be the death march for the Canucks. Penalties, and a lethargic penalty kill are once again playing the deciding factor in game 3.
The first period was a demonstration of the Canucks' speed and toughness, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. And just like game 2, the Kings came out in the second period and owned the Canucks, chasing Luongo in the process.
To start the third period, the Kings have a 2 goal lead, and all the momentum. To have any chance at ...
Ding Dong, The Yetis Dead
[caption id="attachment_669" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption=""Hey Cory, was that just a Yeti you ran over?""][/caption]
The Canuck Train continued to roll tonight, over and through the Colorado Avalanche stomping the Yetis 3-1.
Killer instinct, gotta love it! The Canucks came out and played their game tonight, scoring first and never letting up after that. Ryan Kesler opened the scoring at 3:14 of the first period, wristing a shot over Avalanche goaltender Peter Budaj's glove hand. It was all Canucks after that. Captain Henrik Sedin scored at the 3:33 mark of the second by deflecting a short side shot off the back of a ...
No Love Lost Between Vigneault and O’Brien
It was inevitable that the finger pointing, and the whining and moaning were going to start as soon as O'Brien had his say after he was traded for two Nashville Predators players.
And let it begin:
"Honestly, not really," O'Brien said when asked if he ever felt wanted in Vancouver. "My teammates were so good to me. The front office is first class all the way, it doesn't get any better than that.
"But as far as being a player, I never thought I got a fair shot here. I never thought I had a chance from ...
First Road Win Tonight Against the Oil Drips?
Coming off a resounding win against the New Jersey Devils last night will hopefully carry over to Edmonton where the Canucks will shoot for their first road win of the season, as they take on the young but spunky Oilers at Rexall Place.
The Canucks engine appears to be primed to start a long winning streak as they looked very good against the struggling Devils. The Oilers too will be looking to build on their confidence level after spanking the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago 'not quite the same' Blackhawks Friday night by a margin of 7-4.
Burrows will finally be in ...
One and Done: Blackhawks Lead Series 3-1
Or should that read “Blackhawks Own Series 3-1?” Open a thesaurus and pick any word meaning ‘domination’ and insert it into above sentence. Because that is exactly what happened to the Canucks in game 4 of the series, they got “owned.”
Lets give credit where credit due, the Blackhawks came out to win this game to take a commanding 3 game lead in the series, and that is exactly what they did. They outplayed Vancouver on offense, defense, and goaltending. It was a perfect game for the Hawks, and it was a hellish game for the Canucks.
The hell started 18 seconds ...
Kyle Wellwood Plays in Russian League
Sportsnet reports that ex-Canuck spark-plug Kyle Wellwood has signed with Atlant Moscow Oblast for over $1 million including bonuses.
Wow! Say what you will about Wellwood, but for a guy who isn't big, or fast he sure was a blast to watch last season. Maybe the European game will better suit his skills.
Good luck Kyle!
As Samuelsson Goes, So Goes the Canucks
The Swedish connection is alive and well in Vancouver! Mikael Samuelsson lit the lamp twice in LA, and added an assist to help lift the Canucks past the Kings with an impressive 7-2 win.
After chasing LA Goalie Jonathan Quick in the second period, everybody knew the rout was on, and the number one line of Sedin, Sedin, and Samuelsson were driving the train.
The Canucks lead the series 3-2, and can win the series Sunday night with a win. Ever since game four, the Nucks have been coming together as the team we expect ...
“It’s Time To Get Giddy, Canucks Fans.”
That's what ESPN's Pierre LeBrun is calling for all Canucks fans, as he predicts “The Canucks will romp through the Northwest, finish first in the division and top the tough Western Conference."
Hell, I was giddy when Luongo dropped the "C" because I knew then that he was going to concentrate on being the goaltender he can be. And everyone knows that when your goaltender is hot, all the other pieces just seem to fall into place. And according to the who's who of Canadian sportswriters, the Canucks' pieces have fallen into place!
ESPN's Joe Bell:
“The Canucks are as stacked as any ...
Are You Ready?
It’s finally here, the start of the 2010 Stanley Cup playoff drive, and the Canucks’ quest has begun. Like previous years, I look forward to the playoffs feeling confident that the Canucks will at least go deep, if not make it to the finals. But it never seems to fail that the Canucks make an early exit in the first or second round.
Confidence quickly turned to stunned bewilderment as I watched Luongo stink up the joint in last year’s semifinal series game 6 against the Blackhawks letting a one goal lead in the ...
Everybody Seems To Have An Answer For Byfuglien In Game 4
Adjustments, adjustments, and more adjustments seem to be the magic word for tonight’s game 4 in Vancouver. Talking about adjustments is one thing, making adjustments is another, and then executing the adjustments is a totally different thing all together. Well, tonight’s the night we get to see if our boys can walk the talk!
Two adjustments that have been mentioned over and over again is the power play, and net presence in front of Niemi. Dealing with Dustin ‘the Beast’ Byfuglien isn’t an adjustment, but rather a frame of mind. Someone, or maybe two or three players are going to need ...
Canucks of Old Reappear for Game 5, Beating Chicago 4-1
Who the hell was on the ice playing the Blackhawks? It was the Vancouver Canucks! But not the same Canucks that we’ve watched stink up the ice for the last three games. No, it was the Canucks of the regular season variety that showed up tonight to remind the Blackhawks they may be down, but they definitely are not out!
After all the talk about what the Canucks had to do, and supposedly were going to do to solve the Blackhawks dominance in the last three games, finally was being realized. The Canucks were composed throughout the game, not taking stupid ...
Its True: God Hates The Washington Capitals!
Of all teams, the underdog Montreal Canadians turned out the lights on the President’s Trophy Winning Washington Capitals playoff drive, defeating them 2-1 in game 7.
Like last year’s President’s Trophy winners, the San Jose Sharks, the Washington Capitals went out in the first round after being heavily favored to make a deep run into the playoffs. It seems the curse has shifted from California to Washington!
After Washington took a 3-1 lead in the series, the Canadians answered the call and reeled off 3 straight wins to take the series. Nobody thought the Canadians ...
$30,000 Apparently Heals All Emotional Wounds
Speculation is that the "Assaulted Fan" could get a $30,000 settlement from Rick Rypien/Canucks for having his Minnesota Wild jersey wrinkled by Rypien as the player was headed towards the dressing room after being ejected from a game on October 19, 2010.
James Engquist, the Minnesota Wild fan who seemingly bit off more than he could chew by not being able to keep his mouth shut is now complaining about being the victim of harassment! He says he's been harassed via phone calls, e-mails and on the Internet. Really? He's doing all this to himself, so he has nobody to blame ...
Henrik To Add More Hardware To The Trophy Case?
Henrik Sedin has been nominated for the NHL’s most valuable player award. After the announcement was made, he received a standing ovation from his teammates in the Canucks locker room.
Henrik has already won the NHL scoring title by finishing the season with 112 points (29 goals and 83 assists), becoming the first Canuck to win the honor. Now he is in the running to win the league’s MVP award.
Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin were also nominated. Both Crosby and Ovechkin finished the season with more goals than Sedin, but Henrik has been ...
Canucks Get First Road Win…Barely!
[caption id="attachment_655" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Raffi Torres the Oiler Killer"][/caption]In what started out to look like a rout of the Edmonton Oilers by going up early 3-0 in the first period, quickly turned into another example of the Canucks nearly losing the game by the letting the other back into it!
In what is becoming a common script for the Canucks, the one which portrays a hockey team on a mission that thoroughly dominates it's opponent nearly bringing them to their knees in act one, then gives up the drive in acts two and three. Well, acts two and three belonged to ...
Have The Canucks Learned Nothing From Last Year’s Series With The Blackhawks?
Round 2, game 3 of the 2010 Western Semifinal at the Garage looked eerily similar to round 2, game 2 of the 2009 series against the Blackhawks. The similarity between both games is Dustin Byfuglien. The 247 pound, six-foot-three forward once again is wreaking havoc in front of Luongo, and giving the Canucks' defensemen fits.
The physical play of Byfuglien in front of Luongo, coupled with stellar goaltending from Blackhawks netminder Antti Niemi was all that was needed to beat the Canucks 5-2 to take a 2-1 series lead. The Canucks threw everything they had at Niemi in the first period, ...
Bring on the Blackhawks!
With the Chicago Blackhawks eliminating the Predators earlier this evening, they will now meet the Canucks in round two of the playoffs.
We all remember last year’s round 2 outcome with the Blackhawks, and it wasn’t pretty.
Bring your best Chicago, because it’s pay back time!
Ryan Kesler Makes Mark With RK17 Clothes Line
Ryan Kesler has added to his portfolio by partnering with FIRSTSTAR Sports to introduce an exclusive 'Kesler inspired' collection of apparel.
Kesler's line of sporting apparel, aptly named RK17 will be making it's debut next week. Just what the world needs, another athlete endorsed line of clothing! But hey, who am I to judge? My entire wardrobe consists of 5 Nucks jerseys, 1 team Canada Olympic jersey, 1 NFL jersey, a handful of Canucks caps, tees and hoodies, about 20 DiveSkins and the required amount of jeans, shorts and flip-flops. So I don't really know anything about 'fashion', but I hope ...
Luongo’s “Failure” Laughable
[caption id="attachment_1461" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Now what did I do Wrong?"][/caption]It seems things can never get good enough for some media outlets that cover the Vancouver Canucks. If its not one thing, its another as some reporters seem to be fishing for "sensational" stories in an attempt to take some of the shine off the brilliant playing Canucks. Its time for it to stop!
There is not too much bad news coming out of the Canucks camp lately as the team is riding a hot streak to the top of the NHL standings. The Canucks are 16-1-2 in their last 19 games. ...
Canucks Embarrass Blackhawks in Game 1 With 5-1 Win
Did the Blackhawks forget when the game started or was Luongo and company hell bent for revenge over last years series two loss? I’m thinking a little of both.
Where was Chicago’s physicality, will, and any kind of desire to want to win this game? Or did Luongo exact his revenge by stifling the Blackhawk snipers every chance he got?
Yes, Luongo was motivated to show that he was a better goaltender than he was in last years series against Chicago, and he didn’t disappoint, stopping 36 of 37 shots.
Chicago’s will to compete was crushed ...
2 Minutes For Blowing a Two Goal Lead
Was it the bad too many men on the ice penalty that was the reason the Canucks lost game 2 on Saturday night? No. Say what you will about the Linesman's bad call, but the real reason the Canucks lost the game was their own fault, or should I say it was Andrew Alberts' fault.
With a two goal lead at the end of the first period, the Canucks looked as if they were going to roll over the Kings without barely breaking a sweat, but the Kings, and ultimately the Canucks had other ideas ...
Welcome to the House of Blues ‘West’, St. Louis
If any team has the right to sing the blues, its St. Louis. After having an excellent record in October, going 7-2-2 and then watch it go into the toilet in November with a 6-7-1 record, that's gotta hurt.
The Blues are on a five game losing skid after dropping a close one in Edmonton last night, losing in OT 2-1. Their road record this year is a dismal 4-7-3, and don't expect that stat to improve tonight as they face a red hot Canucks team who boast a stellar 8-2-1 record at home. If the Blues are hoping for a ...
Canucks Overcome Disallowed Goal to Beat Oilers 3-2
[caption id="attachment_1264" align="aligncenter" width="540" caption="Oiler Killer Raffi congratulates Kevin Bieksa after his game winning goal."][/caption]
After a slow start to the game, which saw no goals in the first period, the Canucks overcome a two goal deficit to defeat the never-say-die Oilers to earn a 3-2 win in front of the home team fans.
After the Christmas break, nobody really knows which team is going to show up for the first game back, and tonight's game was no different. After a fairly even first period where neither team seemed to show any turkey hangover symptoms it was the Oilers who struck first ...
Western Conference Semi-Final Schedule Announced
The Calendar dates are set. Round 2 of Round 2 of the rivalry between the Canucks and the Blackhawks will begin Saturday, May 1st.
Saturday, May 1 5:00 p.m. Vancouver at Chicago
Monday, May 3 6:00 p.m Vancouver at Chicago
Wednesday, May 5 6:30 p.m. ...
Sometimes Vegas Changes Your Plans
I had full intentions of catching the Canucks/Wild game at the Belagio Sportsbook on Friday night, but a poker tournament got in the way, as what is prone to happen in Vegas!
I had it all planned out. Arriving at the Sportsbook early,(proudly wearing my Ryan Kesler jersey I might add) to catch a prime seat, then place a wager or two, and settle in with some friends and cold beers to watch the home team exact some revenge on the visiting Wild. But alas, the poker room ended up calling our names, and being mere mortals who were we to ...
Canucks Blank Pitiful Devils 3-0
No cob webs, or rust here! The Canucks came out and dominated the woeful Devils for a full 60 minutes tonight, and come away with a 3-0 win improving their home record to 5-0-1. The Canucks have now won three straight, handing the Devils their second straight loss.
Raffi Torres opened the scoring mid-way in the first by taking a pass from Manny Malhotra who capitalized on a Devils error at the side of Brodeur's net and wristed it past Brodeur. It was Raffi's third goal of the year. Ryan Kesler made it 2-0 at 1:09 of the second by being ...
Morrison Signs With Hated Rival Calgary
Let the regrets begin!
24 hours after the Canucks release Brendan Morrison, the Calgary Flames sign him to a one year contract worth $725,000!
It's bad enough that the Canucks let the home grown talent go, but it will be a hard pill to swallow seeing him in a Flames sweater! The Canucks loss, is definitely the Flame's gain!
Is The Fix In?
The use of video review is supposed to be another set of eyes on the ice to determine whether a questionable goal is either good or bad. Its supposed to work, after all video doesn't lie, right? Well I guess that all depends on who's looking at the video review!
Early in the third period, a goal by Daniel Sedin was disallowed because the NHL determined after looking at the video review that he propelled the puck into the net "with a kicking motion".
The official word from the NHL War Room:
INSIDE THE NHL SITUATION ROOM:
VANCOUVER ...
Brendan Morrison Released by the Canucks Sunday
[caption id="attachment_313" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Brendan Won't Be A Canuck"][/caption]
Say it ain't so! Brendan Morrison will not have a chance to call the Canucks home for another season, as the club has released him from his professional tryout contract.
TSN confirms that Morrison has been released by the Canucks and is free to explore other options after the two sides couldn't reach a signing agreement.
This is really disappointing! I was really looking forward to watching Morrison don a Canucks sweater this year and help the team drive to the post season, but it isn't to be. Granted, Morrison isn't the same player ...
NHL Digs a Deeper Hole for Themselves
According to National Hockey League vice-president Mike Murphy, Daniel Sedin didn't kick the puck into the net, but rather "twisted his toe"!
Have you ever caught somebody in a lie, and then watch them squirm as their excuses and reasoning’s become more and more unbelievable? That’s just what the NHL is doing now!
In a press conference after the Vancouver/LA Kings game, Mike Murphy was desperately trying to keep his bottom lip above the shit line as he attempted to justify the War Room's decision to disallow Daniel Sedin's third period goal, ...
It’s Going To Be A Wild Afternoon, So Get The Coffee On! Wild at Canucks
[caption id="attachment_2550" align="aligncenter" width="450" caption="Afternoon games mean only one thing. Wild Morning Breath!"][/caption]
Firstly, I'm not a big fan of afternoon games in general, especially when it involves the Canucks. I have a hard time getting motivated early in the weekends, and it's probably difficult for the boys as well. But it is what it is, so the Canucks will have to play the hand they are dealt by the league schedule maker. All I can say is I hope the Red Bull is cold and plentiful before the game!
Both teams are coming off of spirited wins. The Canucks with a ...
Henrik Sedin Sets Up Game Winner
In true Art Ross Trophy form, the league's best setup man, and scoring points leader sets up Mikael Samuelsson to beat LA goalie Jonathan Quick in OT for the game winner.
It wasn't exactly the 'foot on the throat of the enemy' win I was hoping for by the Canucks, but a win is a win after all! More importantly, Vancouver wins game one at home, and leads the series 1-0.
Jonathan Quick was stellar for the Kings in his debut NHL playoff game, stopping 41 of 44 shots for a .932 save percentage. Luongo ...
Canucks Move On To Round 2
With a game the Canucks needed to win, not only to secure their ticket to the second round of the playoffs, but also to prove that they are not going to be a push over and make an early exit like years before.
LA played a hell of a game. They played the game like it was going to be their last, but they couldn’t beat Luongo. Yes, Luongo was the difference in game 6.
Roberto Luongo was definitely the difference in the game, keeping his team in it until the Sedin twins could find a ...
20 Minutes of Domination Seals Game Four Win
The Canucks dominate the third period to overcome a one goal second period deficit to defeat the Kings 6-4.
The first 40 minutes of the game looked identical to games two and three. Bad penalties, non existent penalty kill, and Luongo being unable to make clutch saves resulting in losses to the upstart LA Kings. That all changed in the third period of tonight’s game.
The Canucks were finally able to kill a penalty, and seemed to gain momentum from the unusual feat. Mikael Samuelsson started the comeback by scoring his fifth goal of the series ...
